By varying the source components and their reaction conditions, it is possible to modify size, structure and composition of the particles, thereby controlling the properties of the product, such as the refractive index, X-ray absorption, mechanical properties and density. Depending on the requirements, the particles can be produced in a dispersion or as a powder. A defined size distribution is an important characteristic of the quality of the particles. For example, methacrylate-modified SiO2 particles have an average diameter of 56 nm and a standard deviation of only 4 nm.
