Particles in the submicron and micron ranges are being used in many different applications, e.g. as fillers or catalysts. Defined size distribution and morphology are especially important prerequisites for their successful use. Many applications also require functionalization of the particles' surfaces.
Functionalized metal-oxide particles The first step entails the creation of monodisperse, spherical, oxidic particles of MxOy (M = Si, Ti, Zr, Sn) by hydrolysis and polycondensation (sol-gel processing) of their respective pure or compound metal-alkoxides. Next, the surfaces of the particles are functionalized by means of amine, vinyl, (meth)acrylate or epoxy groups. ORMOCER® particles The particles are produced in a sol-gel process with organically modified alkoxysilanes in batch processes as well as in continuous flow reactors. The sizes can be adjusted from 10 nm to 300 µm, with the specific surfaces in a range of 4 to 600 m2/g (BET), depending on the manufacturing conditions. It is also possible to produce porous SiO2 particles by pyrolysis of the organic components of the ORMOCER® particles. Possible areas of application - Dental medicine
- Medicine
- Catalysis
- Chromatography
- Optics
- Electronics
