The problem

In recent years, PVC sheets, floorings and coverings have been criticized for their lack of environmental acceptability. Also, foreign substances - such as food colors (e. g. carotenes) and soil - can easily migrate into the PVC and cause undesirable discoloration.

Migration of plasticizers and foreign substances in PVC

The main points of criticism are plasticizer emission and/or migration, and susceptibility to soiling. In many instances, stains can not be removed even with intensive cleaning.

The solution: ORMOCER® migration barrier coatings

This solution provides stable functional coating systems with very good barrier properties, as well as good scratch and abrasion resistance and, if necessary, antistatic properties on different types of polymeric substrates (e.g. PVC).

Properties

The migration of plasticizer or susceptibility to soiling caused by foreign substances is drastically reduced when an ORMOCER® migration barrier is applied:

Effects of ORMOCER® coatings on plasticizer migration in PVC plates

Other properties of the coating material:

  • Adhesion (DIN EN ISO 2409) Gt: 0-1
  • Condensation water test (DIN 50 017): stable
  • Taber-Abraser test (ASTM D 1044 - 85): 1.2 % light scatter (after 100 cycles)
  • Spec. surface resistance: 108 ohms

Applications:

Abrasion resistant, antistatic migration barriers for PVC sheets or structural parts.
