There is a growing demand for plastics with high barrier properties, especially for applications in the packaging industry. Such plastics are used to protect the contents of the packaging against external influences, such as contamination by oxygen or water vapour, or against a loss of ingredients (e.g. flavors).

The solution

By applying ORMOCER^®s (in layer thicknesses of 0.5 to 5 µm) to standard substrates used in packaging (e.g. polyolefines, polyester, paper), composite structures with a superbarrier effect for water vapour, oxygen and flavor are created. The ORMOCER^®s can be used not only as coating materials, but also as laminate adhesives with barrier properties.

Properties

Coating systems with excellent barrier properties (migration barriers, for plasticizer in plastics such as PVC), and good abrasion resistance on different polymeric substrate sheets.
